Wylma Burba Smart, 76, died at Jackson County Memorial Hospital July 22, 1993. Services have been scheduled for 11:00 am on Saturday, July 24, at the First United Methodist Church. Reverend Ken Pate will officiate. Burial will be in the Altus Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
Mrs. Smart was born January 17, 1917, in Tuttle, Oklahoma, to James Edward and Florence King Burba. A graduate of Oklahoma College for Women, she began teaching at Colony, Oklahoma, in 1938. In 1939, she married Frank Smart at Frederick, Oklahoma. Prior to moving to Altus in 1954, she taught in the Clinton and Warner Public Schools. During her over 30 years as a a teacher of English, she positively influenced her students to accomplish more than they thought possible. In Recognition of that fact, his year, Altus High School established the Wylma Smart Excellence in English Award to recognize the exceptional work of a graduating senior.
Following her retirement from teaching in 1967, she has been active in the McDowell Club, the Democratic Women's Club, the Shortgrass Arts and Humanities Council. She was former chairman of the Southern Prairie Library Board, and a member of the Oklahoma Foundations for the Humanities. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Skinner is survived by her husband, Frank Smart of Altus, Oklahoma; daughter and son in law, Myrna Ruffner and Bill of Tulsa, Oklahoma; grandson, Casey of Tulsa, Oklahoma; stepmother, Lucille Burba, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; brother, Howard Burba, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sitser Nola Dickey of Alex, Oklahoma.
The family of Wylma Smart has established memorial to the Southern Prairie Library or to the First United Methodist Church elevator fund in honor of Mrs. Smart.
