Obituary for Nola Daphine Reid
Daphine (Watkins) Reid, 81, passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2009, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus.
Daphine was born January 1, 1928, in Eldorado, Oklahoma, to Charlie Baxter and Mary Fannie (Fowler) Watkins. Daphine, sometimes called "Debbie", attended Lincoln School during the dust bowl. She and her brother Darwin walked one mile to catch the school bus. In the 1930"s, snow finally fell. Brothers Narvel and Ted scooped it into the cistern to make water to drink. Eggs were hatching by a kerosene lamp that heated an incubator in the dirt cellar. Chicken, turkeys, hogs, and cattle supplemented the cotton crop and garden.
During World War II on March 21, 1945, she married TSgt. John L. Stermer in Galveston, Texas. To this union, two children, Ernie Mac and Anita June were born. Daphine was so proud that her children attended college. She married John H. Reid in May of 1995. He preceded her in death February 2, 2005.
Daphine owned and operated Debbie"s Diner for many years. She spent almost every day of her life in Eldorado. She was a member of Business and Professional Women"s Club and was "Homemaker of the Year". Daphine was a devoted and long-time member of the First Baptist Church in Eldorado.
Preceded in death by her parents, husbands John Stermer and John Reid, and her brothers and sisters, Velma Lawrence, N.C. Watkins, Ted Watkins, and Mary Dean Watkins, Daphine is survived by one son, Ernie Mac Stermer of Tahlequah, Oklahoma; one daughter, Anita June Stermer of Eldorado, Oklahoma; one brother, Darwin Watkins and wife Mildred of Hope Hull, Alabama; four grandchildren, Chris Keilberg of Kamay, Texas, Shane Stermer and wife Angela, also of Kamay, Jason Van Treese and wife Heidi of Eldorado, and John Elliot Stermer Ogle of Albuquerque, New Mexico; six great-grandchildren, Gorden Black and Brittany Stermer, both of Kamay, Texas; Samantha Van Treese, Jason Van Treese, Kaden Snyder, and Devin Snyder, all of Eldorado. She is also survived by many other relatives and numerous friends.

Mrs. Reid will lie in state Friday afternoon until Sunday night. The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 8, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Eldorado.

Funeral Services for Daphine Watkins Reid will be held 10:00 am, Monday, August 10, 2009, at the First Baptist Church in Eldorado with Reverend Pete Wylie officiating. Interment will follow at the Eldorado Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Eldorado.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to PAC (Peoples Action Committee), P.O. Box 57, Eldorado, OK 73537. A tree will be planted in her memory on Main Street, Eldorado, OK, at the former site of Debbie"s Diner.
