Obituary for Nova Pearl Hankins
Nova Leonard Hankins, age 95, resident of Edmond, Oklahoma and a former resident of Altus, Oklahoma and Eldorado, Oklahoma, passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at her home in Edmond.

Nova was born November 9, 1927, in Altus, Oklahoma, to Carl Wesley and Annye Pearl (Maples) Abernathy. She lived in Altus until 1994 when she moved to Eldorado, Oklahoma, where she lived until 2008. Nova then moved to Edmond, Oklahoma, to be close to her daughter, Judy Reece.

Nova married Harold Gene Leonard at the First Baptist Church in Mangum, Oklahoma, on July 8, 1945. He preceded her in death in October 1985. Nova later married Fred Hankins at the First Baptist Church in Hastings, Oklahoma, in January of 1994 and he preceded her in death in June of 2001.

Nova was very active in several clubs and was the president for two terms for the Gladiola Unit Flower Club, Garden Club President in Norman, Oklahoma, a member of the Extension Homemakers Club where she helped with many county fairs, and served as president for Business and Professional Women's Club in Altus. She also was an overseer of Navajo elections for five years.

Nova was a member of the First Baptist Church in Eldorado where she served on many committees, a faithful worker in Sunday school, Bible School, and preparing meals for funerals and choir. She also was a Sunday school teacher at the Altus First Baptist Church during the time she resided in Altus. In addition, Nova was the Director of Esculitia Day Care for migrant children.

She was a giving, loving person if she knew there was a need. She had a tendency to put money in a person's pocket or purse to help with expenses. Nova also made sure that children of the church were able to go to camp each year or help with buying school supplies for children in need.

She is survived by her daughters, Judy Reece of Edmond and Gloria Davis and husband Robert of Lubbock, Texas; grandchildren, Tracy and wife Britt Reece of Edmond, Julie and husband Alan Berger, and Donna Barbee, all of Lubbock; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Raegan and Rylee Reece of Edmond, Brett, Tori and Peyton Berger, and Faith and Grace Barbee, all of Lubbock. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends,

Her parents, brothers, Carl Abernathy, Jr., Cecil Abernathy, and Chester Abernathy, as well as sisters, Margaret Imel and Nella Faye Gentry and husbands Gene Leonard and Fred Hankins, preceded her in death.

She loved flowers, sewing, gardening and cooking for family and friends. She was the nicest and sweetest person you could ever meet. The best mother, grandmother, and great grandmother you could ask for in the world. Her favorite was an Irish Blessing: May God grant you always a sunbeam to warm you, a moonbeam to charm you, a sheltering Angel so nothing can harm you, laughter to cheer you, faithful friends near you, and whenever you pray, Heaven to hear you.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at the Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel in Altus with Pastor Pete Wylie officiating.

Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Altus under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory, Altus.
