Opal Christine Smith, age 95, of Mangum, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2009, at Grace Living Center.
Mrs. Smith was born on October 14, 1913, in Mangum, to M.W. (Jake) and Mamie Pearl (Adams) Silk. She moved from Mangum to the Victory Community, in Jackson County and in 1917, they moved to the Centralvue - Russell Community. She attended the Centralvue School, marrying Raymond Smith in 1930. They farmed in the Russell area and she worked in the grocery stores at Russell. They moved to Mangum in 1949, where she worked as a sales clerk in ladies" and men"s clothing stores, drug stores, Otasco, livestock sale and Mangum City Hospital. A longtime member of the First Baptist Church, Mrs. Smith served her Sunday School Class as secretary for several years and served as Treasurer of the Centralvue Alumni Association for seventeen years.
Preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, in 1963; her son, Gail, in 1975; her daughter, Laura Beth in 1936; four brothers, Wesley Neil Silk, Willis Lester (Bill) Silk, Kenneth "Doc" Silk and Joe Silk and one nephew, Rick Silk in 1996, she is survived by one brother, Jake Silk and wife Minnie Marie of Sayre; one daughter-in-law, Kay Headley of Portland, Oregon; two sisters-in-law, Mary Sue Silk of Lawton and Dean Smith of Mangum; eight nieces and nephews, Sylvia, Kenneth, Sherman, Butch, Charles, Brian, Cindy and Joe; twenty-three great nieces and nephews along with many other relatives and friends.
Graveside services for Opal Christine Smith will be held at 2:30 p.m., Monday, October 12, 2009, at the Russell Cemetery with Rev. Cindy Ritter officiating. Services are under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
