Obituary for Oscar M. Tidwell
Oscar M. Tidwell, 85, passed away on Friday, August 12, 2005 at the Lawton-Ft Sill Veterans Center in Lawton, Oklahoma.

Oscar was born on January 14, 1920 in Marrietta, Oklahoma to William John Tidwell and Mary Margaret (Taylor) Tidwell.

He attended school at Ozark and Altus and then joined the United States Army. Oscar served as a member of the 45th Division Thunderbirds 245th Tank Battalion; Combat Infantryman; and was a Sharpshooter. He served in Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Southern France, Rome-Arno, Rhineland, Germany and Central Europe. Oscar served with General Patton at the Battle of the Bulge during WWII
and went on to serve in the Korean Conflict also. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Ribbon, EAME Service Ribbon, Silver Service Star and One Bronze Service Star. Following his discharge from active duty, Oscar served in the National Guard.

Oscar returned to Altus in 1952 and went to work driving a Truck for Lawrence-Kimbrough Company. He then joined the Altus Police Department and worked there until he was hired on by the Civil Service at Altus Air Force Base where he was the Material Facilities Supervisor until his retirement in 1979.

Oscar was a lifetime member of the American Legion where he served as Post Commander. He coached American Legion baseball for many years and had numerous championship teams including the 1968 Southwest Oklahoma District Champions.

He married Helen Violet DeSpain on October 16, 1941 in Altus, Oklahoma. They were married 53 years until her death in January of 1995. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Jack, William and Alfred (Pete) one sister, May.

Oscar later married Linda Hunt in August of 2003 in Altus, Oklahoma.

He is survived by his wife Linda, of the home; one son, Rodney Tidwell of Roosevelt, Oklahoma; one daughter, Pat Rowland and husband Lynn of Altus; two step-sons Troy Hunt of McKinney, Texas and O.C. Hunt of Altus, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Heather Irwin and husband Roger of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Shawn Tidwell of San Diego, California, Rashell Johnson and husband Rhet of Duke, Oklahoma, Tyson Rowland of Edmond, Oklahoma, Austin Hunt and Christopher Hunt of Altus, Oklahoma; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Bonds of Altus, Oklahoma and several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Services for Oscar M. Tidwell will be held on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 at the Lowell-Tims Chapel with buril following at the Altus Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, August 15, 2005 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
