Ovena Wanell Milton, age 81, passed away Monday, October 17, 2016 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital in Altus, Oklahoma after a long battle with Alzheimer"s.
Ovena was born in Jackson County on August 21, 1935 to her parents Jesse and Dema (Ray) Winkler. As a young girl she lived in Sulphur, OK and learned to be proficient in sign language while her parents worked at the Oklahoma School for the Deaf in Sulphur. She was a graduate of Altus High School and attended Business School in Wichita Falls, TX. Ovena married Joe Lynn Milton of Altus on June 18, 1954, and she and Joe recently celebrated 63 happy years of marriage. Ovena was the secretary and personal assistant to the Jackson County District Attorney under D.A."s Steve Suttle and John Wampler until her retirement from the State.
Ovena was a lifetime member of the Delta Eta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, held office of President and earned the prestigious "Order of the Rose" degree. In 1970 Ovena founded the Miss Altus Pageant as a Miss Oklahoma Preliminary Pageant, adding a value event to the community of Altus and garnering support from the Chamber of Commerce and numerous local businesses. The Miss Altus Pageant has evolved into an important funding source of cash and scholarships for countless contestants. Ovena was more recently named Emeritus Assistant Director to the Miss Altus Pageant.
Ovena was preceded in death by her parents Jesse and Dema. She is survived by her husband Joe of Altus, Oklahoma; her daughter Rhonda Hampton and her husband Adam of Nashville, Tn.; her daughter Dana Hicks and her husband Shane of Altus, Oklahoma.
The family will greet friends at visitation from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am, Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jeff Moore officiating.
Private family interment will be at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory, Altus, Oklahoma.
