Obituary for Owen Preston Bryce
Owen Preston Bryce, a member of one of Jackson County's old pioneer families, passed away Wednesday morning at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
In 1889 Owen's grandfather, Mr. F.S.I.C. Bryce, led his family to this area, Owen's father W.P. Bryce being only three years old at the time. Grandfather Bryce, a Methodist lay preacher, had the honor of organizing one of the first Methodist congregations in this area. They met for services in a sod dugout which was located on the land where the Altus Drive-in Theater now stands.
Owen was born here in Altus on the 26th of June 1911. He attended Altus Public schools and graduated in 1932. He was a life time member of the First United Methodist Church and an active participator in all areas of the church community. He was a well-known Jackson County farmer and served as a member of the Martha Co-OP Gin for 20 years. Owen had a special vocation in horse breeding and raised horses most of his life. He was an active member of the American Quarter Horse Association for over 20 years.
On December 1,1935, Owen Preston Bryce was married toLaura Mozelle Lowe in Enid, OK. They made their home in Jackson County and raised a family which now includes a son, Paul Bryce, a daughter, Linda Wiginton and four grandchildren, Bobby Bryce, Bettilou Bryce, Owen Preston Bryce and Chad Edsel Wiginton. Also surviving is Owen's Mother, Mrs. Willie Ethel Watts Bryce of Altus, three brothers, Eugene Bryce of Altus, Warren Bryce of Altus and C. F. Bryce of Lexington, TX; two sisters, Sue Hartsell of Altus and Robinette Tucker of Oklahoma City.
Owen was preceded in death by: his Father, Mr. W. P. Bryce in 1963 and two brothers, James Bryce in 1945 and Thurman Bryce in 1955.
Funeral services have been set for 2 P.M. Friday at the First United Methodist Church with burial in Restlawn Cemetery under the direction of Lowell Funeral Home.
