Obituary for Paul M. Smith
Paul M. Smith, age 80, passed away Sunday, May 19th, 1996, at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Graveside Services have been scheduled fort 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, 1996 at the Altus City Cemetery with Sonny Tims officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lowell Tims Funeral Home.

Mr. Smith was born September 15th, 1915, at Hess, Oklahoma to John M. and Bertie (Fitzgerald) Smith, early day settlers. His great-grandmother, Elvira Hargrove Hess, was the first postmistress at Hess, Oklahoma. Paul graduated from Altus High School in 1934 and from Draughn's School of Business in Oklahoma City, OK.

He worked for the Federal Land Bank in Wichita, KS until he began his U.S. Army career. He served 20 years with assignments in Germany, England, Korea, and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. He served his country with distinction in WWII and the Korean Conflict. While on active duty he was awarded the Bronze the Star, the U. S. Army Commendation Medal, both with Oak Leaf Clusters. He retired from the Army in 1966 and came back to the Altus area.

Survivors include: two brothers, Leon Smith of Altus, OK and Cloyes Smith of Oklahoma City, OK; a sister-in-law, Margaret Smith of Altus, OK; two nieces, Diane Allgood of Altus and Susan Hilderbrandt of Oklahoma City, OK; two nephews, James Paul Smith of San Diego, CA and Monte Smith of San Francisco, CA. His family included several great nephews and nieces and a special friend, Bobbie Woodard.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, J.M. Smith and Bertie (Fitzgerald) Smith; and a brother, James L. Smith.
