Obituary for Ray Travis Vinyard Sr.
Ray Travis Vinyard Sr., age 85, of Altus died Sunday, August 9th, 1998 at his home in Altus after a lengthy illness.

Ray was born on May 16, 1913 near Altus to Samuel H. and Dora Lee (Robinson) Vinyard. He married LaVeta Eldridge on September 15, 1938 and together they lived in the Altus community for many years.

Ray taught in the Altus Schools for many years as the Auto Mechanics teacher until his retirement. He was a great inspiration to all his students and was always concerned for their success in life. He was a member of the OEA, NEA, and Retired Teachers of Jackson County.

Ray was a member of the First Baptist Church and a deacon for over 50 years. He taught and worked in the Sunday School Department for 60 years and was also in the church choir for a number of years. He was President and Vice President of the Altus Lions Club since 1982 and was on the Board of Directors from 1993 to 1995. He had 100% attendance for five years with the Lions Club. He helped with the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, Meals on Wheels and was a member of the Woodman of the World.

Ray was a pioneer in the surgery he received. Many times he came to the hospital to be an inspiration to others having the same type of surgery. Ray loved gardening. Some of the flowers in h is casket spray came from his own flower garden. He loved the Lord, his family, children and grandchildren and gave of himself with love.

Services will be Wednesday, August 12, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Baptist Church of Altus. Burial will follow in the Altus City Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife LaVeta of the home in Altus; two children, Ray Vinyard, Jr. of Oklahoma City and Janet Dobson of Altus; two brothers, Roy Lee Vinyard of Plano, TX and Harold Vinyard of Altus; five grandchildren, Bo Dobson of Altus, Dee Jay Dobson of Altus, Paul and Melissa Vinyard of Oklahoma City, Keith Vinyard of Moore and Michelle and Luis Almodobar, Jr. of Norman, OK; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and other survivors which include Yolanda Vinyard of Moore, OK.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Jackson County Memorial Hospital.
