Obituary for Richard Reid
Richard P. Reid, 67, a well known and highly respected registered land surveyor and community volunteer died Friday, July 11, 2003. Dick burst into this world on Labor Day, September 1, 1935, at Hinton, OK. with a surveying transit in one hand a 22 rifle in the other. As the youngest of four children born to Finley and Rita Reid, he led his parents and older siblings a merry chase. Finley was a Methodist minister and a PK, Dick lived in all four quadrants of Oklahoma. His most enjoyable memories were of his high school years in Marlow. His senior year was spent, however, in Cordell where he played baseball and basketball and hunted along the Washita.
Dick attended college i 1953-54 at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford. The Reids were transferred to the First Methodist Church, Idabel, OK, where he met Molly Cockrell on June 6, 1954, and love transformed his life for the remainder of his days. they were married by his father on September 4, 1955, in Idabel and immediately moved to Denver, Colorado. Dick's surveying and engineering career began with the Denver Municipal Water Works. They returned to Oklahoma for Dick to attend Oklahoma A&M in 1956, He supported his family as Maitre de of the Student Union Restaurant while carrying a full class schedule. Molly and Dick's first son Mark was born in 1957 and their second son Jay was born in 1963. He became officially registered as a Land Surveyor for the State of Oklahoma in 1969. For twenty years he worked for the City of Stillwater serving as the Chief of Surveying Crew through City engineer. During these young adult years, Dick was active in the Stillwater Jaycees serving as
Vice President of the NE Oklahoma Division, and active i the Stillwater Highland Heights Methodist Church and First Christian Church. OSU athletic events-football basketball and wrestling-were important fan participation with family and friends.
Throughout Dick's life, he was an avid outdoorsman and wildlife conservationist. He taught his sons to go into a campsite and leave it in even better condition for the next campers. Dick's friends can attest to his love for sharing deer, turkey and dove hunting experiences.
In 1979, Dick and Molly moved to Altus where he was Chief Engineer for 3-Way Constructions and later served as Branch Manager. In 1981, Dick became the Chickasha City Engineer where he was very active in both the rotary and the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce.
Altus called him back in 1984 again with 3-Way, where he was active in Rotary and the Altus First Christian Church. Dick served as Rotary President in 1995-96 where he was proud to host an exchange group form France, to initiate the position of Chaplain in the Altus Club, to sponsor the 75th anniversary of the Altus Club and to be named a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow. He lived by the Rotary Motto: Service Above Self.
Dick always looked forward to annual dove hunts hosted by Altus businessmen at Quarts Mountain for Oklahoma CEO's. He was on the Charter committee of Jackson Co. Emergency Medical Service (EMS), and served as president of that board for a number of years where he doubled the number of ambulances and staff, and initiated the installation of the first automatic defibulator in a state ambulance service.
Dick was always ready to assist Molly with her many United Way community projects. He was a family man first, and was thrilled when grandchildren Austen, Monica and Travis were born to Mark and Kristyn, and Natalie and Emily were born to Jay and Dinah.
He was a member of the local Air Force Association, the Altus Chamber of Commerce serving on the Transportation Committee of 100, and the Oklahoma Society of Land Surveyors.
In 1997, Dick formed Altus Development Corporation (ADC) Inc., where he brought his Registeded Land Surveyors expertise full circle. He took pride in his dealings with area landowners, and serving as a mentor to his ADC employees. It was in this capacity that Dick was honored to have had a significant role in the building of Imagination Station.
Dick loved his God, Molly, his family, his friends, his community, his association with Altus Air Force Base, his dog Lovey. He will surely be missed by all who have been addressed in this remembrance.
