Obituary for Richard W. Sweeney
Richard W. Sweeney, age 85, of Altus, Oklahoma, died Wednesday, April 3rd, 1996, in the home he shared with his son, James and family. He was born September 3rd, 1910 in Neola, Iowa. His parents were James V. Sweeney and Susan (Stiever) Sweeney. Until he enlisted in the U.S. Army, he farmed with his father, did custom combining and drove a truck. He married Harriett Hughes July 12, 1936 in Crawford, NE. His career in the Army spanned over 20 years. He was a skilled photographer in the Army working at White Sands Missile Range, NM at the time of his retirement. He retired in December 1962 spending the next 23 years in Omaha, NE. Due to health, he made his home with his son moving with him to Illinois, Alabama and Oklahoma.
He was active with the Senior Citizen Center taking pictures of events held there. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church.
Services will be held in Neola, Iowa, with Memorial Services held in Altus at a later date.
Mr. Sweeney was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and two sisters.
He is survived by his son, James and daughter-in-law Joanne of Altus, Oklahoma; and his son Michael of Denver, CO. He leaves five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
