Obituary for Ricky Donell Byrd
The Legacy of Ricky Donell Byrd
Ricky Donell Byrd was the first born son of Albert 'Buddy' and 'Ms Willie' Byrd in Caldwell, Texas.
He was the 4th child of eight, 4 girls and 4 boys. His parents and two siblings preceded him in death.
Ricky moved with his family to Hollis, OK. In 1956. There he grew in stature and favor with his family, school, and community. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior at a young age and was baptized at Zion Hill Baptist Church by Rev. W.C. Clytus.
Ricky was educated in the Hollis School System. As a star athlete, he was All State and All Conference in football, basketball, track, and baseball in high school. In his adult years he was his competitors' worse nightmare in baseball, pool tournaments and shuffleboard at Joe Dan's Sports Bar. You name it, his talent spoke for itself! He was also an avid fisherman and hunter.
His work included working for Hollis Cotton Oil Mill, and building trailer houses. His love for the farm and God's green earth led to a career in farming. He worked for Seddon Farms and later for Robinson Farms. His knowledge of farming and farm equipment made him an expert sought after by many in the Southwest area.
Ricky was a family man. He and Mertlene Bell raised four children; Jason, Sharon, Marcus, and Lillie. Later he married Gladis Marie and helped raise Octavia, John Ray, and Jameka. He has 24 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his immediate family, his siblings, Jewel Buckingham, Almatene Byrd, Sandra Byrd, Larry Byrd, and Sean Byrd, sister-in-law, Grace Byrd, Aunt Eula Crouse, a host of nieces, nephews, friends and good buddies.
Funeral services will at 1:00 pm on Friday, February 26, 2021 at the Harmon County Funeral Home Chapel in Hollis with Pastor Tammy Ingram officiating.
