Robert Carl Sanders was born May 2, 1927 to Alfred and Helen Wiles Sanders Firzsimmons Army Hospital in Fitsimmons, Colorado. He graduated from Reed High school in May of 1944. He served in the US Navy from June 1945 until May 1946. He started college in September 1946 at Southwestern State College in Weatherford, OK. He received his BA in Education in July 1950. Robert married Nina Stanfill on December 20, 1947 at his fraternal grandparents; home in Mangum, OK. The couple spent their honeymoon in Oklahoma City.
Robert's first teaching job was at Lake Valley, north of Gotebo where he taught from August 1948 to May 1950. During this time, their first daughter Patricia Ann was born on December 20 1949 in Hobart. Robert's second teaching job was at Butler where he taught 5 years. During this time, two more daughters graced their marriage. Carla Beth was born July 14, 1952 in Hobart, OK. and Donna Kay was born October 3, 1955 in Clinton, Ok. The family then moved to Amarillo, TX. where Robert was employed at Amarillo AFB as an instructor in aircraft systems. Their next move was to Martha, OK in July 1957. Robert taught in the Martha school system until May of 1962. While associated with the Martha school system, Robert spent 3 years as a principal and 2 years as superintendent. Additionally during this tenure, Robert returned to school to receive his Masters degree in July 1960. Robert and his family then moved to Mangum where he served as superintendent of City View until its; closure in 1962 until 1962. Robert and family then moved to Blair where he served as principal from 1963 until June 1969. Another move took the family to Elmer, where he served as principal from 1973. His work then took them to Altus, OK. as a counsleor in the education department at Altus AFB in September 1973. While at Altus AFB, Robert spent two years as an instructional systems development specialist in the tech training area. Robert then returned to the education office as an education counselor. From 1982 until his retirement in May 1990, Robert held the position of Education Services Officer. Robert's favorite past time was doing what he loved, teaching. Robert taught Sunday school classes in Amarillo, Martha, Blair and Elmer. Robert served as Methodist Youth Fellowship sponsor in Blair and a Lay speaker in the Methodist Church in Martha, Blair and Elmer. Recently, Robert served on the Board of Trustees at First United Methodist Church in Altus. Robert served as a 32nd degree Mason and was a member of the Yel Del Masonic Lodge. Above all else in his busy schedule, Robert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to all. Robert is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nina; daughter, Patricia Weber and her husband, Bob, of Duncan, OK.; daughter; Carla Miller of Moore, OK., daughter, Donna Horn and her husband, George, of Woodbridge, CA.,; one brother, Charles sanders of Electra, TX., one sister, Evelyn Wilson of Electra, TX.,; one sister-in-law, Gloria Sanders of Oklahoma City,; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, James; and a great granddaughter, Shayla. Those who have known and loved Robert Sanders and have been touched by his life are to numerous to mention.
Services have been scheduled for 10;30 am, Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at Lowell-Tims Chapel with Rev. Doug Burr officiating. Interment will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. Family visitation will be Tuesday, March 4 from 6:30 to &:30 pm at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus, OK. The family also requests that all memorial gifts be made to the Family Life Center of 1st United Methodist Church in Altus, Ok.
