Robert Sutherland, 87 of Altus passed away December 10, 2022, at Magnolia Creek in Altus, Oklahoma.
On August 11, 1935, in Montrose, Missouri Everett J. and Ana May Sutherland welcomed their son Robert Sutherland into this world. Robert was a rebellious youngster who enjoyed being in the woods with his two brothers more than the classroom. As soon as Robert was old enough, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Robert would serve over twenty years in the Air Force and during his time in the service it would take him around the world. He served two tours in Vietnam and on countless duty stations abroad and within the United States. Robert worked as a fire fighter, helping to protect his fellow Airman from harm. While he was stationed in England Robert met the love of his life Maureen Macauthur. On June 1, 1957, Robert married Maureen. From this union two sons were born Charles and Danny Sutherland and one granddaughter Jessica. Robert’s greatest passion in life was his wife, he loved her more than anything, and there wasn’t anything he won’t do for her. Robert retired from the United States Air Force on December 1, 1972. Not one to stay idle long Robert continued his mission to serve our country by working in civil service as a fire fighter for Altus Air Force Base for another twenty years.
Robert was a Christian and a believer in Jesus Christ. Together Robert and Maureen would travel the ends of the earth to spread the good news of salvation that can be found in Jesus’ name. Robert and Maureen went to Brazil, Malawi, Romania, Hungary and Kenya on mission trips.
They were active members of the First Baptist Church in Altus. Robert served on numerous capacities in the church.
Robert leaves a legacy of love and devotion to his country, his family and to his savor Jesus.
Receiving Robert in heaven were, his beloved wife Maureen Macauthur Sutherland; his parents, Everett J. and Ana May Sutherland; his brothers, Alan Sutherland, and Eugene Sutherland.
Left to honor Robert’s legacy are his two sons Charles Sutherland and his wife Hollis, Danny Sutherland, along with his precious grandchildren, granddaughter, Jessica; grandson, Christopher; great-grandsons, Tauno, and Miles.
Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 15, 2022, at Altus City Cemetery, Altus, Oklahoma.
Funeral services have been entrusted to Lowell - Tims Funeral Home and Crematory, Altus, Oklahoma.
