Obituary for Sammie J. Holthe

Sammie Jo Holthe was born to Samuel and Lorena “Tina” Dougherty near Emory, Texas on January 22,

1933. She passed away peacefully in her sleep after a brief stay with Hospice at Magnolia Court in Altus,

Oklahoma on March 25, 2023. She was ninety years old.

Sammie grew up with her siblings on a small farm outside of Emory. On August 17, 1951, she married

Otto L. Holthe whom she loved for 48 years until his death in January of 2000. She supported her

husband’s Air Force career, being stationed together in Texas, Hawaii, Florida, South Carolina, and finally

in Oklahoma. In 1969, they moved to Altus, Oklahoma where he retired from active duty in 1975.

One of the most endearing of the many qualities about Sammie was that she loved and enjoyed her

family. She had the very important job of being a homemaker and raising her five children. She loved

cooking and baking for the family and decorating the house during the holidays. Her Christmas, Easter,

and Thanksgiving meals were always the highlight of each holiday and will continue to be a special

memory in the hearts of her family. In her later years, she greatly loved her grandchildren and great

grandchildren and enjoyed watching them learn and play. She always had snacks, toys, board games,

and adventures ready for their visits. She always kept the cookie jar full!

She also had many friends over the years. She especially enjoyed coffee time with the group lovingly

called the “Golden Girls” and talking with her neighbors of many years. She had a quick wit which made

their times together fun and interesting.

Sammie had many interests and hobbies during her lifetime. She enjoyed plants and could talk about

the many different types, including the wildflowers of Texas and Oklahoma; and also enjoyed seeing

wildlife at the Quartz and Wichita mountains. She also loved to read and often brought home several

novels from the library at a time. She was active for many years at Our Savior Lutheran Church, where

she often taught Sunday School and helped plan the fellowship meals. After Our Savior closed its doors,

she attended Faith Lutheran Church and enjoyed services there.

She liked to watch a lot of sports on television, which was a passion going back to the time of listening to

games on the radio as a young girl. She enjoyed watching football, baseball, and basketball, both college

and professional. She mostly followed teams from Texas and Oklahoma but also followed any team that

featured standout players from Oklahoma or teams that were just “fun to watch”. She also enjoyed

watching a variety of shows including different mysteries, sitcoms, Jeopardy, quiz show reruns, and

action movies.

She had fun being called “The Queen.” She will be greatly missed.

Sammie Holthe is survived by her five children and their spouses: Cathy Stone and husband Don, Cindy

Carrick and husband Gary, Otto Lawrence Holthe II and wife Nancy, Sam Holthe and wife Rose Marie,

and John Holthe.

She is also survived by six grandchildren and their spouses: Carrie Farrell and husband Ramsey, Jennifer

Turner and husband Will, Jordan Carrick and wife Stevie, Lauren Grigg and husband Logan, Otto (Trey)

Holthe III, and Samuel Holthe; and by her nine great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her sister Bobbye Blackmon and several nieces and nephews.
