SHULTZ

Samuel Cecil Shultz, age 89, of Altus, passed away Friday afternoon, September 27, 2013, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Shultz was born in Hess, Oklahoma on November 27, 1923, to Samuel Van Buren and Lula Gertrude (Johnson) Shultz. He attended Hess School through the eighth grade and graduated from Elmer in 1940. After graduating from Altus Junior College and Oklahoma A&M with a degree in Electrical Engineering, he joined the United States Navy on October 2, 1944 and served his country until honorably discharged in 1946. Serving on the U.S.S. Ault, Cecil saw World War II come to an end and walked the streets of Nagasaki and Hiroshima shortly after the bombs were dropped. While in the Navy, Cecil completed Electronics Courses, at the Harvard University Graduate School of Engineering, from December 2, 1944, to March 30, 1945 and also completed courses at Massachusetts Institute of Technology from April 2, 1945, to August 13, 1945, in Principles and Applications of Radio, Radar and Sonar. Taking leave that same year, he returned to Southwest Oklahoma and married the love of his life, Edna Mae Shirley on February 25, 1946, and they spent the next sixty-seven and one-half years together before his death. Once married, the young couple found an apartment on Beacon Street in Boston, Massachusetts and later lived in a house across from Bunker Hill. After his honorable discharge in January of 1947, Cecil taught Descriptive Geometry at Okmulgee. After one semester the family moved back to Hess where he began farming with Edna Mae"s father. In August of 1959, the family moved to the farm west of Altus. In the mid 1970"s he started farming with his son David. Cecil and Edna Mae moved to Altus in August 1996. Cecil was a long time, active member of the First Baptist Church, serving as a deacon at Hess First Baptist and in Altus for over fifty years. Retiring from farming in 1989, he and Edna Mae became full-time travelers. They spent time seeing all fifty states, Canada, the Holy Lands, Mexico and several locations overseas. In his spare time, Cecil loved boating, going to the lake, camping, traveling in their motor home and being with his family.

Preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Brenda Kay Shultz; two brothers, Frank Elms and Frank "Pete" Shultz and three sisters, Agnes Edwards, Gertie Savage and Gladys Kolman, he is survived by his wife, Edna Mae, of the home; one son, David Shultz and wife Tawna of Edmond; two grandchildren, Candace Kiehn and husband Dr. Mike Kiehn of Oklahoma City and Brandon Shultz and wife Wendy of Chino, California; five great grandchildren, Caitlyn Kiehn, Joseph Shultz, Halle Kiehn, Jeshua Shultz, and Ashlyn Kiehn; one sister-in-law, Norma Lea Southall along with many other relatives and friends.
