Obituary for Sandra Ann Nichols


Sandy Nichols, of Altus, civic leader, outstanding buisnesswoman and bank vice president, passed away on Thursday, August 23, 2007, at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City after a 5-year battle with Breast Cancer.
Sandra Ann (Sage) Nichols was born in Frankfort, Germany on November 15, 1955, to Col. Gilbert and Shirley Sage. She grew up in Lawton, Oklahoma after Col. Sage was transferred to Ft. Sill in 1956. Her parents retired in Lawton and Sandy completed her public education at Eisenhower High School. She attended Cameron University where she met and fell in love with her husband, Rodney Nichols.
Sandy and Rodney were married on January 4, 1975. They moved to Stillwater where Sandy helped Rodney complete his degree at Oklahoma State University. The couple moved to Altus in 1980.
Sandy was a professional buisnesswoman having worked in the banking industry for more thirty years. She was a dedicated Vice President at the National Bank of Commerce where she had served in many capacities. Her gift was to befriend and help anyone in need. She was a dedicated civic leader and her goal was to help make Altus a better place for all. She was active in many organizations and had received many awards for her contributions to the community and to Altus Air Force Base. Sandy was a long time member and served on the board of Directors of the Altus Chamber of Commerce. She also served as the chair or co-chair on many committees including the Committee of 100, ACC Ambassadors, Military Affairs Committee, ACC Leadership Altus Altus IV Graduate, Altus Air Force Base Honorary Commander three times, Southwest Oklahoma United Way board member and treasure and 1995 Co-Chair for the Fall Campaign, Member and Past-President of Altus Kiwanis Club. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, initiated the Imagination Station idea and saw it through its construction, received the Prestigious "Friend of Altus Air Force Base" honor, initiated the formation of the Air Force YMCA and served as board member, associate member of AAFB Spouses Club, member of Jackson County Relay for Life, worked with the Oklahoma Arts Institute, Short Grass Arts & Humanities Council, served as President of Southwest Oklahoma Chapter of Bank Administration Institute, American Military Bankers Association member and helped her bank receive the best Bank in the Air Force Award twice.
Her father, Col Gilbert Briggs Sage II, preceded Sandy in death.
She is survived by her husband of thirty-two years, Rodney Nichols of Altus; her children Ryan Nichols of Tulsa and Casey Nichols and his wife, Courtney, of Broken Arrow; her brother Gilbert Briggs Sage III, of Lawton; her mother, Shirley Ann Sage of Lawton and many other family members and friends who have supported her during her battle with cancer.
Services for Sandy Nichols will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 27, 2007, at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home Chapel in Altus with Rev. David Player officiating. Interment will follow at Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
The family will greet friends at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home on Sunday, August 26, 2007, from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm.
The family request donations be made to the American Cancer Society , Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research or the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in lieu of flowers
