Obituary for Tommy Loys Fewell Abernathy
Tommy Loys Fewell Abernathy, age 85, passed away Aprill 11, 2002, at the Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Services are set for 3:00 p.m., Saturday, April 13, 2002 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Chapel with Rev Joe Mac Floyd and Bob Maxey officiating. Interment will follow in the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home. The famikly will be receiving guests Friday evening, April 12, 2002 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
Mrs. Abernathy was born January 31, 1917 near Portales, New Mexico to Thomas David and Frances (McClure) Fewell. The parents were pioneer settlers of Jackson County, but had moved to New Mexico for health reasons. They returned to Jackson County when Tommy began first grade and graduated in 1934. She attended Altus Junior College as it was called at that time and finished her degree at Southwestern Oklahoma State College. She later taught English and Mathematics at Harmony, Martha and Ozark High schools.
In 1943, she and Raymond Abernathy were married and established a home in the Ozark community. They lived there for 52 years, before moving to Altus in 1995.
She was a member of the Altus First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for 35 years before retiring and joining the Priscilla Class in Adult VI. She was active in the Ozark Homemakers Club and was Vice-President and President of the County Unit. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Abernathy was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Ralph Fewell; two sisters, Robbie Bonds and Emma Madden, also a niece Laveta Jo Bonds.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond; two sons and wives, John and Cindy Abernathy and Larry and Lynn Abernathy; one daughter and husband, Frances and Craig Sterling. She is also survived by six grandchildren; Larisa Weldon and husband Russell, Christy Lyles and husband Larry, Stacy Abernathy, Lyle Abernathy, Leigh Abernathy and warren Sterling; two great-grandsons, Grayson and Peyton Weldon, and many nieces and nephews including a special niece, Ethelene Brunson.
