Obituary for Vera Lee Speer
Vera Lee Speer passed away peacefully while surrounded by her children and stepped into her eternal home with her Lord and Savior on April 29, 2020. She was born in Alvord, TX on August 25, 1934 to Arthur Lewis and Sarah Ellen Dickenson. Vera grew up on the family farm near Gotebo, OK. She excelled in academics while graduating as Valedictorian from Cooperton Valley School. As a five foot two inch guard, she was a dynamo on the basketball court as well as the softball field. Following graduation she moved to Altus, OK and worked at Woolworth's lunch counter. Vera met the love of her life, Bob Speer at the Armory roller skating rink. They were married at Tabernacle Baptist Church on March 10, 1956. God blessed them with 61 years of marriage.
Vera was a devoted wife and mother, leaving behind a large legacy of family. Doug and Terri Speer of Altus, Ok, Dana and David Taylor of Corsicana, TX, Donita and Val Crane of Eagar, AZ, Debra and Paul Moesinger of Oklahoma City, OK. Grandchildren Jared Speer, Kaylee Speer, Tiffany Harrison, Courtney Prater, Zac Taylor, Lindsey Huffer, Amber Webb, Leslie Hardee, Ben Turner, Hillary Harris, Hailey Uriate and Hannah Moesinger plus 13 great grandchildren. Brother Jerry and Judy Dickenson of Altus, Ok, nieces and nephews.
Vera was involved in the family business, attending car auctions and driving purchases home. Friday and Saturday nights found her at Altus Speedway/Pleasant Valley Speedway in the concession stand cooking with her sisters-in-law. Vera had a deep love for God and her family. She was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and VBS. She had a passion for music and was a member of the choir, singing solos and specials. She played the piano and organ for the church throughout the years. Her women's missions Joyful Heart ministry was very special to her and she enjoyed decorating and hosting them in her home.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Allen (Bob) Speer; her parents, Arthur Lewis and Sarah Ellen Dickenson; brothers, Donald Dickenson and Johnny Dickenson.
Viewing will be held Friday, May 1, 12:00pm-7:00pm at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, Altus.
Family graveside service will be held on May 2 at Altus City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the "Joyful Heart" women's ministry at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 321 N Lee, Altus, OK 73521.
