Verna Philbrick Blackwell
Verna Blackwell was born in Biddeford, Maine, on September 13th, 1919, to Charles E. Philbrick and Bertha May Kimball Philbrick. She graduated from Thornton Academy in Biddeford, Maine in 1938. She also attended Maine School of Commerce from 1938 to 1939.
She married Lt. James LeMaster Blackwell of Spartanburg, South Carolina, in Saco, Maine, September 10, 1942. His career in the United States Army and Civil Service took them to many locations. The family moved to Altus in 1969.
She was a faithful member of Grace United Methodist Church. She participated in the Altus-Mangum Cancer Support Group and was a past volunteer with the Reach for Recovery program for breast cancer patients, the ACMI House, and Jackson County Memorial Hospital Hospice.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James LeMaster Blackwell in 1991, daughter Rebecca Rachel Blackwell in 1951. a beloved son Daniel Kimball Blackwell in 2004, and a brother Carroll Philbrick.
She is survived by her children, James M. Blackwell and wife Sarah Snell, Houston; David Charles Blackwell, Austin; Mark Edward Blackwell and wife Barbara, Wichita Falls; Deborah Elaine Blackwell Roe of Roswell, New Mexico; Jeffrey Scott Blackwell, MD and wife Denise, Everett, Washington, and Bonnie Elizabeth Blackell McAskill and husband John, Altus, and two brothers, Jesse Phibrick and wife Dorothy of Saco, Maine; and Richard Philbrick and wife, Bess, Athens, TX. She is also survived by her grandchildrren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, October 14, 2006 at 10:00 am at Grace United Methodist Church with Reverend George Lupton officiating. Interment will be at the Ft. Sill Post Cemetery at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. Arrangements are under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
