Obituary for Viola "Vie" Stern
Viola "Vie" Elizabeth Stern, long-time Altus resident, passed away peacefully on October19, 2022 surrounded by her loving family. Vie was 73 years old when God called her home.
Vie was born on July 9, 1949 in Altus, Oklahoma to her parents Claude White and Verla (Bennett) White. She grew up in Altus and the family moved to Texas where she graduated high school. Following graduation, Vie moved back to Altus and married Paul Matthew of the United States Air Force and they lived in Spain for two years while he was enlisted. Shortly after Paul's passing, Vie moved to Paris, Texas.
During her work career, Vie was employed at a furniture factory in Guthrie, dabbled in interior design and decorating, and also did upholstery work. Vie later found her passion in helping others by becoming a caregiver in the Home Health field.
Vie married her second husband, Augusta "Gus" Stern on May 26, 1998 and the happy couple made their home in Altus. They shared over 20 blessed years together until Gus passed away in 2019.
Vie was an extremely kind and spiritual person. She was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in her early years and later moved her membership to the St. John Baptist Church. Vie enjoyed singing in the choir, attending social events, listening to God's word and listening to her favorite hymns. She also liked spending time with her family, especially her mother, traveling, and visiting friends and extended family members. Vie found comfort in simple things like taking a ride around the neighborhood and trips to the grocery store. Her gentle smile and sweet spirit will be missed by all who knew her.
Meeting Vie at heaven's gates are her husband and best friend, Augusta "Gus" Stern; her parents, Claude and Verla White; her two brothers: Ivory White and Curtis "Survivor" White; three sisters: Veretta Griffin, Esther Palmer and Odessa White; her nephew, Harold White; and her great-nephew, Rodney White.
Left to cherish her beautiful memory are her three step-daughters: Tiffany Stern, Cassandra Stern, and Leta Stern; two brothers: Richard White and his wife, Virginia of Snyder, OK; and Johnnie White and his wife, Lois of Lexington, OK; many grandchildren; a special nephew and niece, Deacon Ricky and Wanda Nelson of Altus, Ok; as well as a host of other relatives, friends, neighbors and church family.
