Obituary for Voyt William "Skipper" Cox
Voyt "Skip" William Cox passed away at his home in Springfield, Illinois, on May 29, 2011. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2011, at the Altus First United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. David Player and Rev. Margie VanOostrum.
Skip was born March 4, 1957, in Ft. Worth, Texas, to Voyt Williams II and Patsy McLeod Williams of Jackson, Mississippi. His sister Terri was born the following year.
Following Voyt Williams II"s tragic death in an automobile accident in 1959, Skip"s mother moved her young family to Altus, Oklahoma, to be near her parents and siblings. A few years later Patsy married Forrest Cox, a pilot at Altus Air Force Base, who then adopted Skip and Terri. It was then that Skip was given the middle name of William. His brother Mark was born in 1964, completing the family.
Skip attended the Altus Public Schools, graduating in 1975. He loved music and was active in the music program at AHS, making the All-State Chorus his senior year and playing the trombone in TAB throughout high school and later in the OU Trombone Choir. Skip received his Associates degree from WOSC and attended Oral Roberts University and Oklahoma University.
Skip loved to fly, especially with his dad. He earned his pilot"s license while at WOSC and was the Pionair Flying Club President.
Learning the dry cleaning business at his dad"s Altus Laundry and Cleaners while growing up, Skip went on to work as a dry cleaner in Oklahoma City. Wanting to broaden his horizons, he landed a position with National Check Cashiers in Oklahoma City. He became a Manager for the company and was relocated to Dallas, Texas, and then promoted and transferred to Atlanta, Georgia, as a District Manager.
After meeting his future wife, Kimberly Bennett, in Dallas, Texas, and vacationing in Florida, Skip and Kimberly chose to move to Florida where Skip owned and operated Skip"s Quality Dry Cleaners. Skip and Kimberly were married September 19, 1993, in Clearwater Beach, Florida. He later returned to Altus to help manage the family dry cleaning business.
Skip later decided that he was going to buy a "Big Truck" and drive cross country, which he did for several years, loving every mile of the journey. After fulfilling that dream, he returned to the dry cleaning business.
Skip and Kimberly recently moved to Springfield, Illinois, to be near her family. While living in Illinois, Skip enjoyed working as an Election Judge and following Illinois politics.
Skip never met a stranger and was always a great host who loved entertaining, especially cooking on the grill. He also enjoyed traveling, deep-sea fishing, and gardening. He was an avid fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys, and all Oklahoma teams. He loved his family and friends unconditionally and will be greatly missed by those who had the good fortune of knowing and loving him.
Skip was preceded in death by his father Voyt Williams II; grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Voyt Williams, Mr. and Mrs. M. H. McLeod, Mr. and Mrs. Markum Cox; father-in-law Charles Ray Bennett; brother-in-law Charles Dennis Bennett.
He is survived by wife Kimberly, parents Forrest and Patsy Cox, sister Terri Redding and husband Jim, brother Mark and wife Missey, mother-in-law Betty Bennett, brother-in-law Kelvin Bennett; nieces Whitney Messick and husband J.T., and Emily Cox; nephews Tyler Redding, Austin Cox, Sean Bennett, and Michael Bennett; Aunt Betty Tabb, Uncle Robert McLeod; 2 great nieces; 1 great nephew.
