Obituary for Waldo Talmage Oden
Waldo Talmage Oden was born May 10, 1895 in Amity, Arkansas. He married Lily Juanita Clark Oden June 3, 1928, who survives of the home. They had three children, Waldo Talmage Oden, Jr. who is married to Jane Oden, Thomas Clark Oden who is married to Edrita Oden, and Sara Elizabeth Oden Hampson who is married to James E. Hampson. He had ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His four local grandchildren are Tal Oden III, Tim Oden, Amy Oden and Andy Oden.

He was instrumental in promoting the creation of Altus Junior College and drafted its original documents in 1926 and was instrumental, with others, in promoting the development of Western Oklahoma State College. He was a charter member of the Board of Regents of WOSC and President of the Board of Regents from 1973 to 1974.
He graduated from the Chicago University and University of Oklahoma and was admitted to the Oklahoma Bar in 1921; was assistant county attorney in Jefferson County, Oklahoma in 1921-1922. He was Special Master of the Supreme Court of Oklahoma, and was admitted to the United States Supreme Court June 6, 1960. He was a member of the Governor's Judicial Nominating Commission in 1967. He was counsel for the United States Office of Price Administration from 1942 to 1946. He was a member of the Jackson County Bar Association, the Oklahoma Bar Association and the American Bar Association.

He was also a member of the American Legion, the Rotary Club, theMasons, and he worked actively with the Boy Scouts of America since soon after its beginning and worked actively in scouting for more than fifty years. He helped obtain the site and raise the money for Camp George Thomas and other scouting enterprises. He was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Scouting Award in 1942.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Altus since 1922 and had served in most leadership capacities. He served as Chairman of the Board, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chairman of the Board of Missions, Chairman of the Methodist District Board of Church Extension, and he taught Sunday School for over half a century. He helped create the Association of Christian Ministries, Inc. (ACMI).

He was a Veteran of World War I, having enlisted in 1917 in the United States Army.

He worked actively on the Y.M.C.A. Board.
