Wanda Smith, age 72, of Burns Flat and formerly of Altus and Granite, passed away early Saturday morning, September 3, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City
Wanda was born on March 20, 1939, in Elmore City, Oklahoma to Uloth Edward and Bertha May (Emberlin) Lyles. Her father died when she was two and the family moved to the Warren, Oklahoma area when she was five. After attending Warren School, she began working in Altus. While in Granite one day, she met Donald Ray Smith, who had just been discharged as a paratrooper from the Army. They were married one month later in Childress, Texas on November 25, 1959. Making their first home in Granite, Don and Wanda were baptized in 1960, at the Granite Church of Christ. In 1966, Don and Wanda began working at Tipton Children"s Home. During the next twenty years, they worked with the Elm and Hudson Church of Christ in Altus, the Faith Village Church of Christ in Wichita Falls, Texas and later back at Tipton Home. Wanda loved children and devoted her life to taking care of not only her own children and grandchildren, but to many others whom were less fortunate and whom she dearly loved.
Preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Edward Lyles and Bill Lyles and one sister, Mary Ruth Williams, she is survived by her husband of fifty-one years, Don, of the home; two children, John David Smith and wife Athena of Altus and Ladonna Valdez of Burns Flat; eight grandchildren, April Smith, Jonathan Smith, T.J. Bonner, David Smith, Tyler McMillan, Seany Valdez, Kelby Valdez and Mercedes Larson; two great grandchildren, Tannah Smith and Maci Goodin; two brothers, Kenneth Lyles and wife Glenna of Altus and Earl Hutchinson and wife Fran of Yukon, Oklahoma along with many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Wanda Smith will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at the Burns Flat Church of Christ with Bill Osborne, Kenneth Lyles and Larry Sparks officiating.
She will lie in state at Greer Funeral Home, in Mangum, on Monday and Tuesday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. and at the Burns Flat Church of Christ on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
A private family burial will follow at the Warren Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
