Obituary for Wayman Leon Smith
W. Leon Smith was born May 10, 1913 at Hess, Oklahoma. He was the son of the late John M. and Bertie (Fitzgerald) Smith. He died December 15th, 1996 in Altus, OK. He was a lifelong resident of Altus and Jackson County. He married Margaret Gibbons, October 12, 1941 at Altus, Oklahoma.

Leon Smith from Altus High School where he was very active in the Altus Sports Programs. He attended the University of Oklahoma. He was affiliated with the Baptist Church. He served in World War II with the United States Air Force. He served overseas with the 15th Air Force where he was based in Italy, and remained there until the end of the War. He served as past president of the Lions Club, was honorary member of the Future Farmers of America, served as chairman of the Junior Livestock Show, was a charter member of the Round-up Club, owned and operated the Gate City Dairy Bar for 40 years in downtown Altus and owned Gibbons Outdoor Advertising until he retired.

Services will be Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ken Pate and Sonny Tims officiating. Interment will be at the Altus City Cemetery. Memorials may be made in honor of Leon Smith to your favorite charity.

Survivors include: his wife Margaret of the home in Altus; one daughter, Diane Allgood and husband Ron of Altus; one brother, Cloyes Smith of Oklahoma City, OK; two grandchildren, Whitney Allgood of Oklahoma City, OK and John R. Allgood and wife Jeana of Oklahoma City, OK; one great-grandchild, Jordan Makenzie Allgood of Oklahoma City, OK.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers Paul and James L. Smith; great-grandmother, Elvira Hess, who was the first Postmistress in Hess, OK.
