Obituary for Wayne Sleepy Woodruff
Wayne “Sleepy” Woodruff, 84, resident of Hollis, Oklahoma, passed away January 16, 2021, at Harmon Memorial Hospital in Hollis, Oklahoma surrounded by his family.
Sleepy was born Donnie Wayne Woodruff on November 27, 1936, in Lexington, Texas, to Ewell Vinson Woodruff and Beulah Emmaline (Barker) Woodruff. Sleepy was the fourth of nine children. He was raised in Marysville, California. While working in Glen’s upholstery shop, he was given the nickname “Sleepy,” and from that day he has been known and referred to as “Sleepy’. In 1955 the Woodruff family moved to Hollis, Oklahoma, to be near family. Soon after arriving in Hollis, in 1959, Sleepy met a beautiful young lady, Betty Mitchell at the Hollis skating rink. On August 5, 1959, Sleepy and Betty were united in marriage in Childress, Texas. This marriage was blessed with four children, Tony, Dale, Elaine, and Chris.
Sleepy was a jack of all trades. He worked for Faulks and Son Drilling, among other places in the Hollis area, and he was later self employed working in small engine repair but also fixed and sold CB radios. He and his youngest brother owned and operated the Phillips 66 station on Broadway in Hollis, Oklahoma. Sleepy enjoyed collecting and repairing clocks, playing the bass, acoustic, and electric guitars, which he was self-taught and played solely by ear. But of all his hobbies and interests, the thing he enjoyed the most was being around his wife, children, and his grandchildren. His grandchildren lovingly called him “Pop”; it was his favorite thing to be called. He always looked forward to going to family reunions and all family events. Sleepy was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Hollis, Oklahoma, by Jim Westmoreland.
He was preceded in death by his father, E.V. ; Mother Beulah, brothers, A.J. Woodruff, David Woodruff; Sisters, Lille Mae “Sis” Crowl, Melba Miller, and Geneva Smith.
Sleepy is survived by his wife of sixty – one years Betty (Mitchell) Woodruff, three sons, Tony Woodruff, Dale and wife Stephanie Woodruff, Chris Woodruff and Mary Mingura; a Daughter, Elaine Hanks and husband Darrell; three brothers, Lonnie Woodruff, Leon “Bud” Woodruff, Joseph “Andy” Woodruff, four grandchildren, Gavin Woodruff and fiancé Alexie, Corey Mingura, Christian Woodruff, and Westin Woodruff and fiancé Mikah. Also, numerous family and friends.
A come and go visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at Harmon County Funeral Home, Hollis, Oklahoma.
Funeral services for Sleepy will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 21, 2021, at the First Baptist Church of Hollis, Oklahoma with Jim Westmoreland and Glenn Alley officiating. Interment will follow the church service to Fairmount Cemetery, Hollis, Oklahoma.
