Obituary for Wilbur C. Carraway
Wilbur C. (Bud) Carraway, age 73, of Altus died Tuesday, April 26th, 1994 in the Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Services are pending with H.M. Patterson & Son in Atlanta, Georgia .
Col. Carraway was born August 19th, 1920 in Savannah, GA to the late Wilbur and Cecile Carraway. He graduated from Savannah High School, attended Armstrong college briefly and then began employment with Standard Oil Company. On December 6, 1941, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. Following flight training, he was awarded his pilot's wings and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant.
Shortly thereafter, he was assigned to the 8th Air Force in the European Theatre of Operations (ETO), where he flew numerous combat missions during World War II as a pilot and lead navigator in the B-17 Flying Fortress.
Upon returning to the Continental United States and recovering from wounds received while in combat, he continued an Air Force career that culminated in 1969.
Col Carraway served in a variety of Staff and Command positions while earning his Command Pilot rating and amassing over 5000 flying hours in B-17's, B-47's, and B-52's. While assigned to Altus Air Force Base, he was the Civil Engineer Squadron Commander, Base Commander and Vice-Wing Commander.
His awards and decorations include The Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross w/Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Medal with Silver Cluster, Purple Heart, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal w/Two Service Stars, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Air Force Longevity Service Award with Six Oak Leaf Clusters.
He is survived by his son, Mike Carraway and wife Julia, Son, LTC (USA) Tom Carraway and wife Wendy, daughter Martha Chambers and husband Dewey, son, Major (USAF) Dave Carraway and wife Jacque, and 14 grandchildren.
Col. Carraway was preceded in death by one son, Sam Carraway, and his wife Kathy and his sister, Frances Middleton.
The family requests that memorials be made on his behalf to the Air Force Enlisted Widows Home Foundation, 92 Sunset Lane, Shalimar, FL 32579-1000.
