Obituary for William Eugene Hayes
William Eugene Hayes,74, a former resident of Blair, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2022, at the Lubbock Hospitality House in Lubbock, Texas.
Bill was born on February 24, 1948, in Altus, Oklahoma to his parents Francis Eugene Hayes and Hazel Juanita Hayes (Southall). He grew up in Blair and graduated with the class of 1966. After graduation, Bill attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, OK where he earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He furthered his education and completed his master's degree.
Bill's work career consisted of the forty-five years of loyal service that he dedicated to the State of Oklahoma's Department of Rehabilitation Services. He worked faithfully as a field coordinator until his retirement in 2016.
Outside of work, Bill loved sports and was a huge OU fan. Bill played baseball for the Lawton Pepsi's (a minor league baseball team) on third base. He was able to hit long balls and often explained that it was much easier to hit it over the fence so he didn't have to run the bases. Bill set and held numerous records for his skills in baseball. He was also an avid gun collector and liked engaging in nerf gun wars with children and grandchildren. He liked hunting and golfing with friends and watching western movies during his spare time. Bill loved to travel anywhere where there was water and owned a condo in Destin, Florida, and visited the beautiful coastline frequently.
On, January 6, 1967, at the First Baptist Church of Blair, Bill and Dawn (Barker) Hayes were united in marriage. This union would be blessed with four children, three daughters, April, Stacy, Chari, and a son, Zack.
Family was the most important thing to Bill. He loved being "Dad"! While they were growing up, he would make a tent in their living room, watch Saturday morning cartoons and eat ice cream with his children. Bill was a huge supporter of his kids and was heavily involved in coaching their activities. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling to Destin to enjoy the ocean and white sand beaches and eat oysters.
His kind spirit, outgoing personality, and genuine love for everyone will never be forgotten.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Hazel Hayes; his grandparents: Garold and Gertruda Hayes; Peyton and Lola Southall; and his son Zackary Hayes.
Remaining to cherish his loving memory are his daughters: April Dawn Hayes, Stacy Jean Hayes, and wife Julia, and Chari Lynn Sells, and husband Zach; his sisters: Nita Hughes and husband David and Lisa Sujean Teel and husband Phillip; his grandchildren: Corey Hayes and wife Nichole, Whitney Gilpatrick and husband Stephen, Jennifer Sunday and husband Travis, Jacob Allen, Jessica Luebking and husband Kirk; Roman Sells, and Drake Sells; his great-grandchildren: Azreel, Nickelis, Tristian, Hadley, Irelyn, Jaci, Jack, and Kallen; the mother of his children, Dawn Barker Hayes, as well as nieces, nephews, other extended family members, colleagues, teammates, and friends.
