William Young West (Bill) passed away early Easter morning, April 21, 2019 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Bill, or Sonny as he was known to relatives, was born March 10, 1929 in Altus, Oklahoma to Sam and Katherine West, the oldest of four children, raised in Duke, Oklahoma.
Bill attended the University of Oklahoma, graduated in 1953 with an accounting degree and proceeded to work with various firms until he started with the Kerr-McGee corporation in Oklahoma City as an auditor. His auditing career took him on trips across the USA and world. He retired from Kerr-McGee after 28 years of service.
In 1958 Bill married Jackie Wilder, together they had a daughter, Phyllis.
Bill always followed and cheered for his beloved Oklahoma Sooners. He collected various articles that set him apart at any Sooners football game. His infectious enthusiasm has been passed on to his extended family.
Throughout his life Bill took pride in woodworking, cooking, gardening (a prize winning gardener) which he loved to share with those around him. Bill also sang in barbershop ensembles in both Oklahoma City and Colorado Springs. An artist, he painted and drew for many years. An active church member of the United Methodist Church. He was always ready for a game of dominos or a John Wayne movie.
Golf was also a joy for Bill. He played in many handicap tournaments across the country and had the enormous joy of playing at St Andrews in Scotland.
Always the storyteller, Bill often regaled tales of traveling, childhood in Oklahoma, and interactions with people he ran across while working.
A generous and giving man, Bill has always taken care of his family, his brothers and sister, nieces & nephews. He was always helping someone and concerned about each family member up until the day of his passing.
He was a quiet man of faith, who deeply loved God, his family, and others.
He is remembered as a kind and caring man who took time to check on the people around him, offering a word of encouragement or humorous story. Bringing a smile to their face and brightening their day.
Bill was proceeded in death by his father and mother, brother Ed, and nephew Jeff West.
Bill leaves behind his daughter Phyllis and her husband Tony, grandson Patrick, granddaughters Brittany and her husband Josh, and Lara. Great-granddaughters Kylie and Emma. His brother John West and sister Karen West, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many friends. He never failed to visit relatives across the country as his work travels allowed him to check in on them.
Graveside services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Duke Cemetery in Duke, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of Lowell - Tims Funeral Home, Altus, OKlahoma.
