Obituary for Winifred McEndree
Winifred "Winnie" McEndree went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 13, 2012, at English Village Nursing Home surrounded by family.
Winnie was born December 2, 1926, in Hollis, Oklahoma to Carpenter Basil and Mattie Lene (West) Balch.
She graduated from Arnett High School in 1942 as Valedictorian of her class.
Winnie married Cecil McEndree on January 17, 1945, in Hollis, Oklahoma. It was a double wedding with Cecil's sister Reba and her husband Billy Teakell. The wedding took place three days before Cecil had to report to Ft. Hood, Texas to serve his country during World War II.
Winnie remained in Hollis until Cecil returned from the war and they moved to Gould, Oklahoma. She worked for C. L. Abernathy Agency in Hollis from 1943 to 1948, when her son Wayne was born. They moved to Altus in 1950 and daughter Susan was born in 1951. Winnie began working at Spangler and Dobbs in 1953. Winnie worked for three generation of Dobbs for 53 years, retiring in 2003 from Dobbs and Brinkman, but continued still doing light work for them from home until the age of 80. Winnie loved her job, being surrounded by the people she worked with, and had a special place in her heart for her many tenants. She could remember who lived where, even up until very recently.
Winnie and Cecil were both charter members of Southside Baptist Church and their church was very special to them. Winnie taught Sunday school for many years, as well as being involved in many church groups and activities, helping wherever she could. Winnie was well known as Ms. Winnie and was dearly loved by all.
Winnie's family was extremely important to her and she was happiest when spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, answering to either Nana or Mema.
She enjoyed reading, cross-stitching, and playing board games or dominoes.
Winnie is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Abigail Brewer Forbes. Winnie is survived by son Wayne and wife Barbara of Norman, Oklahoma, daughter Susan Babione and husband Ronny of Altus, Oklahoma, grandchildren Anna Carpenter and husband Byron, Joe McEndree, Vera Taylor and husband Nic all of Norman, R. C. Babione and wife Bridget of Gainesville, Florida, and Molly Rambur and husband Jimmy of Norman. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and numerous friends. She will be missed by all.
