Obituary for Zen E. Stinchcomb
Zen Ellen (Edmiaston) Stinchcomb was born June 10, 1931 in Loraine, TX and died in Altus, OK, on February 4, 2025. She was the first of three children born to Helen (Lathrop)and Walter Elmore Edmiaston which included her sister, Georganna and brother David.
Zen's family lived in many places in Texas including Ballinger, Loraine, and Fort Worth. She also lived in Oklahoma towns including Strong City and Capitol Hill of Oklahoma City where her mom was a school teacher and her dad was a printer and song writer. Her dad composed many hymns and lyrics that were published in church hymnals instilling Zen's love for music.
Zen was a 1949 graduate of Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City. She attended the Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, and later transferred to the University of Oklahoma, majoring in Home Economics. While attending college she worked in the economics department as a bookkeeper. After graduation, she took a job with Oklahoma State University Extension Service in Altus as a Home Economist. She began her career as an outreach educator to many youth, adults, and individuals. Altus is where she met the love of her life, Joe Stinchcomb.
On August 20, 1955, Zen married Joe Edward Stinchcomb, the ceremony being performed by Joe's uncle, Rev. Joe Wilhelm. It was at this time Zen transferred to the Harmon County OSU Extension office in Hollis. The couple's first home was Joe's birth home in the sandhills north of Gould, OK. They then moved to Hollis where they began to grow their family. After a little more than five years of marriage their first son Joe Edward (Ed) Stinchcomb, Jr. was born. Six years later Jon Timothy Stinchcomb joined the family. Through the years of raising her family she was ever thankful and so very grateful for her son's abilities and successes as adults and their being Christians. She juggled her professional duties and her responsibilities of the home with grace and efficiency. She had a passion for the youth in 4-H club activities and Extension Homemaker groups. During her tenure in Hollis she also became the Director of the Harmon County office along with her Home Economist duties. She was very involved in her church and community. Zen was also a founding board member of the Harmon County Historical Museum, which was one of her many passions. Zen lost the love of her life, Joe, after 58 years of marriage in 2013.
Survivors include her sons, Joe Edward (Ed) Stinchcomb, Jr. and wife Lillie of Hollis; Jon Timothy Stinchcomb and Johnna with ÂTaryn Olivia and Ian Timothy of Midlothian, TX; her sister-in-law Anna Floyd; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews from both the Edmiaston and Stinchcomb families.
