Obituary for Corey Steven Abel
Corey Steven Abel of Denver, Colorado, was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on May 22, 1965. He spent his teenage years in Kerrville, Texas, enjoying life in the Texas Hill Country with his parents and brother. Corey attended Tivy High School where he played football and basketball, developed some of his most cherished friendships, and was an honored graduate. He graduated cum laude from Colorado College with a distinction in Political Science in 1987; received his MSc. in the History of Political Science from London School of Economics in 1988, and his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Chicago. It was in Chicago that Corey met his truelove, Jenni. Their life together took them from Chicago to Boulder, where they married; to Denver, where they welcomed Audrey and Oliver into the world. Corey was a zealous Professor and gifted Writer. Unfortunately, he had to put his professional passions aside when he began the unnecessary, sisyphean task of protecting his Father's legacy against corruption in Kerrville, Texas.
Most of us know Corey as a brilliant Scholar and Writer always striving for knowledge and perfection. But those titles and his many accomplishments do not begin to describe the whole man. Corey was a philosopher, a poet, an inspiring intellectual, a rock-climbing, bike-riding, snow-skiing athlete, a political expert, a world traveler, a great and stimulating conversationalist, a warm and compassionate being, and a great friend and colleague with his own sense of style and goofy humor. More than anything, Corey was a man who gave us all the gift of his unwavering integrity and unparalleled sense of justice; who gave love and joy to his incredible wife Jenni; who gave love and the world to his children; and gave his amazing children to the world. There is no other Corey.
Corey passed away on April 22, 2020, and was preceded in death by his father Lynn DeJuan Abel. He is survived by his partner of 27 years, Jenni Jordan Abel, daughter Audrey Lyn Abel, and son Oliver Emmett Abel of Denver, Colorado; mother Carol Ann (Coniff) Abel of Scottsdale, Arizona; brother Andrew Craig Abel (Valerie Truchot-Abel) and nephew Nino Abel. He is also survived by many loving uncles, aunts, cousins, and in-laws.
