Obituary for Dorothy Mae Inman
Dorothy Mae (Cross) Inman, age 81 of Altus, Oklahoma, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2020 at the Magnolia Creek Nursing Center in Altus.

Dorothy was born on July 26, 1938 in the family home near Utica, Oklahoma to Fuston and Mary Lou (Edwards) Cross. She was the oldest of nine children, and took her role as Big Sister very seriously. She learned from her mother and her Big Momma how to cook, clean the house, do the laundry and care for her younger siblings. Dorothy was saved as a child and was baptized in the Blue River near Bokchito, Oklahoma.

Dorothy graduated from Bokchito High School in 1958. Soon after high school, she and her family moved to the Pleasant Valley community near Snyder, Oklahoma. The family engaged in farming while Dorothy continued her role as caring for her brothers and sisters. Every August, she gave her younger sisters a Lilt home perm right before school started. Those perms were made to last the entire school year and they always did.

Dorothy started her own family, living in Altus, Snyder, and Riverside, California, before moving to Ft. Worth. She managed a Hallmark Store there, and later graduated from Aladdin Beauty School and began her dream of being a hairdresser. She made many friends and made them feel beautiful by styling their hair, and gave a few of her famous long-lasting perms along the way. In 2015, due to her health, Dorothy moved back to Altus to be near her brothers and sisters. Dorothy resided at Plantation Village, now Magnolia Creek and made many new friends. She loved and was loved by many of the residents and staff. During one of her hospital stays at JCMH, Brother Doug Altom came to visit Dorothy. She immediately asked him to officiate at her funeral and wanted to move her church membership to Altus First Baptist Church.

Dorothy enjoyed baking, reading, and spending time with her family. She was well known with family and friends for her fried chicken and chocolate cake. In her latter years, she enjoyed looking at pictures on her sister's phone. She could spend hours looking and talking about those memories.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her daughter, Sharon Strand; her parents; her grandparents, Hubert and Minnie Ola Edwards; Washington and Jane Cross; sister, Lou Etta Siemen; brother, Norman Ray Cross; and her special friend, Sam Orbison.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Sheila Baker; son-in-law, David Strand; grandchildren, Grayson Lough; Michael Baker; Brooklyn Baker; Jarrett Strand; and Jacob Strand; and great granddaughter, Evelyn.

Brothers and sisters surviving Dorothy are Ann Stinson; J.R. Cross; Phil Cross; Betty Hunter and husband Deryl; Dorene Armstrong and husband Jerry; and Lorene Newsome and husband Gary. Dorothy is also survived by many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins, and her special cousin and friend, Betty Sue Crawford.

For those wanting to contribute to a memorial in honor of Dorothy (Cross) Inman, her family would like to suggest the Memorial Fund at the First Baptist Church of Altus, PO BOX 665, Altus, OK 73522. FBC Altus became her home church and the Senior Ministry and Brother Doug Altom provided services and ministered to Dorothy in many ways.

A special heartfelt thank you to the staff at Magnolia Creek for loving and caring for Dorothy.

The Family will greet friends at 10:00 am on Thursday, May 28, 2020 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus with funeral services following at 11:00 am officiated by Pastor Doug Altom.

Interment will follow services at the Fairlawn Cemetery in Snyder, Oklahoma under the direction of Lowell-Tims Funeral Home and Crematory, Altus, Oklahoma.
