Obituary for Sylvia Claiborne
CLAIBORNE
Sylvia Claiborne, age 89, of Wellington, Texas, formerly of Hollis, passed away Saturday afternoon, December 15, 2012, at Collingsworth General Hospital, in Wellington.
Mrs. Claiborne was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on July 28, 1923, to Anthony and Mary (Bradis) Antanavica. After graduating from Commerce High School in Worcester, in 1942, she worked for several businesses in the area. During high school she was a cashier at Brockelman"s Grocery and later at Dobbs Beverage Company as a bookkeeper. In her spare time she worked at repairing and renovating rentals, inside and out. When WWII broke out, she worked at American Steel and Wire Company as a typist in the Engineering Department, then to the Spring Mill Department setting up orders and researching shipment discrepancies. During the war, Malcolm A. Dodson, from Hollis, was in the U.S. Army and stationed in Worcester with the 45th Division, 120th Medical Battalion and they began courting. On July 28, 1945 they were married in Worcester and moved to Hollis a short time later. Malcolm preceded her in death in September 1964 and she later married Virgil Claiborne in 1972, and he preceded her in death in April 1981. During her years in Hollis, she worked at the Dodson Bank, Harmon County Draft Board and for several years in the Housing Office at Altus Air Force Base. In 2007, due to her health, she moved to Wellington, Texas to be near her son.
Preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, one sister, one brother and two sons, Robert Lee Dodson and Jack Anthony Dodson, she is survived by one son, Duane Dodson and wife Shirley of Wellington, Texas; one grandson, Nickie Wayne Dodson and wife Dana of Mannford, Oklahoma; three great grandchildren, Jakob Dodson, Joy L"nae Dodson and Jubilee Nicole Dodson along with many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Sylvia Claiborne will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at Harmon County Funeral Home Chapel in Hollis, Oklahoma, with Rev. Sally Barber Officiating. Interment will follow at the Dodson, Texas Cemetery under the direction of Harmon County Funeral Home, of Hollis.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials be made to Home Delivered Meals, % Panhandle Community Services, 1001 Amarillo St., Wellington, TX 79095 or Wellington Opportunity Center, 817 West Ave., Wellington, TX 79095.
