Delaware Adams, age 94 years, 8 months and 13 days, of Mangum, passed away late Wednesday evening, October 5, 2011, at his home, in Mangum
Mr. Adams was born on January 22, 1917, at Sayre, Oklahoma to Jesse W. and Rose (Hawkins) Adams. In 1921, he started and attended school at Waylon School, west of Sayre, in Beckham County. The family moved to Mangum, Greer County in 1922, where he attended Edison School. He was baptized into the First Baptist Church, in Mangum, when he was nine years old. He moved, with his family, to Reed, in 1931, where he attended Sulphur School through the 10th grade.
On October 6, 1934, he married Lois Watson, the love of his life, of Vinson, Oklahoma, in Mangum. Their marriage license was issued by V.E. "Victor" Wickersham, Greer County Court Clerk. The marriage was performed by the Rev. C.E. Wilbanks, pastor of the Mangum First Baptist Church. They spent seventy-one wonderful years together before Lois" death on July 7, 2006.
Delaware was a retired farmer and rancher. He worked as a mechanic, in the 1940"s, in Texas. Returning to the Mangum area, in 1952, he resumed farming and later worked for Helena Chemical Company, at Martha, and also for the Martha Public School System. He and Lois retired in 1979, from the Martha School System and moved back to Mangum. After retirement, he and Lois enjoyed taking care of their cattle and horses. He also enjoyed singing, playing the guitar and his harmonica. He also enjoyed playing cards and dominoes and visiting with friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse W. and Rose Adams and his wife, Lois Adams. He is survived by five children, Sue Smith of Mangum, Jerry Adams and wife Janell of Mangum, Janice Wooten and husband Frank of Shawnee, Shirley Ludwick and husband Ron of Duncan and Karen Brooks of Mangum; one sister, June Allen and husband Winfred of Reed, Oklahoma; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren; fourteen great-great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and many, many friends.
Graveside services for Delaware Adams will be at 2 p.m., Monday, October 10, 2011, at the Reed Cemetery with Pastor Shawn Johnson, of the Mangum First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of Greer Funeral Home of Mangum.
The family will greet friends at Greer Funeral Home on Sunday, October 9, 2011, from 6 until 7 p.m.
