Marie Emily Anne Breckenkamp Blackwood passed peacefully away on Tuesday, March 6, 2012. Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Highland Heights United Methodist Church officiated by Reverend
Charles Stewart. Visitation will be at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home on Friday at 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Burial will be at the Altus Cemetery alongside her husband, Donald I. Blackwood.
Marie, 95, was born on April 3, 1916, in Leslie, Missouri. At the age of 3, Marie and her family moved to Old Meo, Kansas, later named Formoso, Kansas. She attended all of her schooling in Formoso, graduating salutatorian and winning county honors in math, spelling, and singing. Her singing carried forward throughout her life as she was a natural alto and sang in numerous groups at various duty stations.
Marie married Don Blackwood on October 26, 1936, in Claycenter, Kansas, where they moved after marrying. Don was a pilot during WWII in the Army Air Corps and later became a career officer in the USAF. Together, they lived in 9 states, Oberammergau, Germany, and Quito, Ecuador. They also traveled throughout the lower 48 states and Canada. In all, they were married some 60 years and saw all of America and much of the world.
Don and Marie moved to Altus in January of 1967 and have been here ever since. They joined Highland Heights United Methodist Church shortly after arriving and remain members to this day. Following Don"s passing, Marie lived by herself at home and, later, at Tamarack for the past 5 years.
Marie is preceded by her husband, Don, her sister, Lillian, and her twin brother Bill. Marie is survived by her two children, son Don Blackwood and his wife, Deanne, of Plano, Texas, and daughter Marlee Blackwood and her husband, Tom Nessmith, of Alabama. She is also survived by five grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren that she loved and took great pride in their accomplishments. She is also survived by her close friends who helped her enjoy life after her husband"s passing: Jim and JoAnne Sweeney, Joni Hollingsworth, and the folks at Tamarack Assisted Living.
