Obituary for Mr Daniel M. Abernathy
Daniel M. Abernathy Dan, age 85, longtime resident of Jackson County, died peacefully at the Oklahoma Veterans Center in Clinton, Oklahoma on Friday evening, December 29, 2000
He was born June 8, 1915 to C. O. and Lilly (Rogers) Abernathy in Artesia, New Mexico. Moving to Altus, he attended and graduated from Ozark School and later married Virgie Ruth Davis of Martha on June 6, 1942 in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He went on to serve with the United States Army over seas during WWll with the 32nd Armored Division. Upon returning to Jackson County, he farmed in the Ducks Corner area east of Altus. He began working for the Jackson County Water Company in 1971 as an Inspector, and later became Manager serving in that capacity until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Altus where he served as Deacon, greeter and worked in both the Sunday School Office and the Sanctuary lighting and sound control room. Survivors include: a daughter, Cindy Abernathy of Capt Cod Massachusetts. a son, Paul Abernathy and his wife Gina of Goodland, Kansas, Four Grandchildren: Daniel Abernathy and his wife Anna of Satanta, Kansas, Christopher Abernathy of Altus and Erinn and Lauren Abernathy of Goodland, Kansas, Three great-grandchildren: Kacey, Kyle and Brooke Abernathy. Also surviving are two brothers, Raymond Abernathy and his wife Tommy and Charles Abernathy, Jr. and his wife Mary of Altus: two sisters, Mildred Rowlett and Velma Abernathy of Altus. He was preceded in death by his wife Vergie, his parents, two sisters, Freda Holloway and May Gates, and a brother, Roger Abernathy. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, January 3, 2001 at 2:00 PM in the Lowell-Tims Chapel with Rev. Keith Wiginton officiating. Interment will follow in the Altus City cemetery under the direction of Lowell Tims Funeral Home. ***Family will have a Visitation Tuesday evening, January 2,2001 from 5-7 PM at Lowell-Tims Funeral home.
