Obituary for Beverly Tenora Creed
Beverly Creed, long-time Altus resident, passed away Sunday, January 23, 2011, in Edmond, Oklahoma, from complications of a heart attack on Christmas Day.
Beverly Tenora Bruce was the only child of Lula Lois and Fred Bruce. She was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, September 27, 1919. She grew up in the Stockyards area of Oklahoma City and attended Westwood Elementary, Stonewall Jackson Junior High School, and graduated from Capitol Hill High School. Beverly and her parents were very active in Exchange Avenue Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, where Beverly"s singing talent developed. She and her mother often sang together at church and on the radio.
Her singing talent earned her a scholarship to Oklahoma Baptist University, where she was elected Freshman Queen and Yanseh (yearbook) Queen. She also earned a position on the Girls" Quartet. The quartet traveled around Oklahoma and sang at various churches. The manager and driver of the quartet was a handsome young man named Weaver Creed. Weaver and Beverly fell in love at OBU. They married in March of 1943.
Weaver became a Congressional Aide to U.S. Congressman Victor Wickersham, and the couple moved to Washington, D.C. after marrying. They were active members of their church, and Beverly sang in the choir and performed solos. They made many life-long friends in Washington. Their first child, Carol Lynn, was born in Washington, D. C.
After leaving Washington, Weaver and Beverly moved to Mangum, Oklahoma, where Weaver joined the family wholesale and ice cream business. Their son, Bruce, was born in Mangum.
The family moved to Altus in 1958 when Weaver partnered with Carroll Spangler and Oscar Dobbs in the real estate and insurance business. Beverly taught English and civics at Central Junior High, and later taught typing, accounting, and medical terminology at Western Oklahoma State College in Altus, where she was business education sub-chair. She earned her M.Ed. in education from the University of Oklahoma.

After retirement, Beverly and Weaver enjoyed traveling with many of their golf friends. Beverly loved to play bridge and participated in many bridge groups. At one point, she played bridge as many as 8 times a week. She also worked the daily crossword puzzle and was very good at Sudoku.
Despite her doctor"s cautions against the frequent wearing of high-heeled shoes, Beverly was rarely seen wearing anything else. After fracturing her hip while dancing at her granddaughter"s wedding, she returned to wearing her high heels as soon as she could. She even did her gardening in heels.

Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, Lois and Fred Bruce, and her foster great-grandchild, Kyra Zubah. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Sid Willis, of Edmond; son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Stacy Creed, of Seward, Nebraska; four granddaughters, Christy Atchison of Prescott, Arizona, Susan Godinez of Edmond, Alyson Atchison of Oklahoma City, and Erin Creed of Chicago, Illinois; and three great-granddaughters, Karlee Godinez, and Ana and Penny Sanchez. A celebration of her life will be held at the First Baptist Church of Altus on Thursday, January 27, at 10 a.m. The family will greet visitors Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home.
