Obituary for Mary Lee Benjamin
Mary Lee Benjamin, age 89, passed away Friday, March 22nd, 1996, in the Jackson County Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Mary was born January 22nd, 1907, at Bay City, TX, the daughter of the late Nick and Rose Emma (Taylor) Lewis. The family moved to Oklahoma when Mary was a small child. They settled in the Tipton community and later moved to Altus.
In 1931, she and Fadie Lawrence were united in marriage at Altus, Oklahoma. Mr. Lawrence preceded her in death. In 1947, she married Alex Benjamin in Altus. Mr. Benjamin passed away on January 10, 1989. Mary united with the Macedonia Baptist Church at an early age. She served as President of the Missionary Society, Usher Board, and later became a missionary where she served people in the community and New Hope District Association.
Mrs. Benjamin was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands; five sisters and six brothers.
She is survived by: one daughter and son-in-law, Willie Fay and Ernest Shelly of Altus; three grandchildren, Paul Shelly, Elaine Shelly and Mark Shelly, Sr.; four great-grandchildren, Nikki Fisher, Markesha Turner, Mark Shelly, Jr. and Sean Shelly. Also surviving are a host of nieces and nephews and many, many friends.
