Gregory E. Cross, resident of Altus, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on September 23, 2023, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital at the age of fifty-seven.
Greg was born on June 6, 1966, in Clinton, Oklahoma to Lionell Eugene and Cynthia J. Cross. He was raised and educated in Choctaw, Oklahoma before moving to Navajo, Oklahoma during his sophomore year of high school. In high school, Greg was an accomplished tennis and basketball player. In 1984, Greg graduated from Navajo High School, going on to attend Western Oklahoma State College in Altus, Oklahoma, where he played basketball. Following his tenure at WOSC, Greg attended Cameron University. In October of 1987, Greg volunteered for the Friendship Fire Department. Greg had an incredible passion for firefighting and protecting his community. In 1994, Greg started working for the City of Altus Fire Department. He served the City of Altus with twenty-nine years of distinction. Greg worked in numerous capacities at the department and was currently serving as the Fire Chief at the time of his passing. He loved his community and his fellow brothers at the firehouse. When he wasn't at the fire station Greg could be found farming or taking care of his cattle. He had several farms in Jackson County and Greer County. He enjoyed the quiet peacefulness that could only be found on his land.
On August 31, 1991, Greg married the love of his life and soul mate, Ronna (Snyder) Cross at Friendship Baptist Church. They recently celebrated their 32-year anniversary together. Greg and Ronna were blessed with three children, Nathan, Kalee, and Kasey. One of his favorite things to do was to attend his children's sporting events and he was always cheering the loudest.
At a young age, Greg dedicated his heart to soul to Jesus Christ. He was an active member of the Martha Road Baptist Church. He loved to spread the good word to those around him, often inviting others to Sunday service. Greg enjoyed flying and obtained his private pilot’s license. Since his youth had an incredible passion for racing, and he enjoyed going to Sprint Car races, Indy Car races, and NASCAR events. Every year since 1995 Greg attended sprint car races in Knoxville, Iowa. It has become a cherished Cross family vacation. Another one of his favorite pastimes was ATVs in the mountains. He also made sure to watch the OU football games every Saturday, whether it was in the stands or on TV he was watching his Sooners. Of all Greg's hobbies, an interest in being around his family was his number one priority. He cherished every minute he had with his family. Throughout his life, Greg cracked jokes with those who came to see him, told stories, and loved every moment he got with his loved ones. He had a great ability to make others smile and his sense of humor will be missed.
