COWARD
Doyal D. Coward, age 88, of Eldorado, passed away Saturday afternoon, October 7, 2017, at Jackson County Memorial Hospital, in Altus.
Mr. Coward was born in Harmon County, Oklahoma, at home, on May 10, 1929, to William Washington and Sallie Leona (Swafford) Coward. A 1950 graduate of Arnett School, west of Hollis, Doyal drove the school bus and was active in Baseball and Basketball. After high school graduation he worked for his father and local farmers doing farm labor for two years. In 1952, he went to work as an auto mechanic for Caswell Chevrolet, in Hollis, for three years. On August 16, 1953, he married Faunett Bridges, at the home of Tom and Lillian Bridges, and they spent the next sixty-four wonderful years together before his death. In 1955, they moved to Lubbock, Texas where he worked for Kuykendall Chevrolet, as an auto mechanic for 6 years. In 1957, Doyal was baptized and became a member of the Church of Christ. In 1961, they moved to Eldorado, Oklahoma and he built Doyal’s Garage and was self-employed as an auto mechanic for 27 years. In 1988, he sold Doyal’s Garage and went to work for the State of Texas, as a supervisor of young men in the state Mental Health and Mental Retardation program, in Quanah, Texas for the next 6 years. In 1994, he retired from the State of Texas and began plowing for Keith Hooper and working odd jobs as his health allowed.
Preceded in death by his parents; one son, Steve Coward; two brothers, Wayne Coward and Terry Coward and three sisters, Audrey West, Leona West and Janette Struthers, he is survived by his wife, Faunett, of the home; their children, Sandy Gunkel Coward, Kathy Coward Weaver, Ken Coward, Tena Ferenczhalmy and husband Roland, Lori Strawn and husband Greg; eleven grandchildren, Micah Coward and wife Jerusha, Megan Sanford and husband Kade, Morgan Simons and husband Chris, Ashley Coward, Blake Coward, Cody Coward, Nathan Ferenczhalmy, Matthew Ferenczhalmy, Ryan Strawn and fiancée Kaitlyn Estes, Berritt Strawn and Lilly Strawn; five great grandchildren, Rhett Sanford, Lyla Sanford, Jace Farr, Kendall Simons and Emma Simons; one brother, Chester Coward of Borger Texas; two sisters, Tula Mae Ellis and Barbra Kemp, both of Pampa, Texas along with many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Doyal Coward will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, October 11, 2017, at the Eldorado Church of Christ with Eric Houck and Kade Sanford officiating. A private family interment will follow.
The family will greet friends at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home, in Eldorado, on Tuesday evening from 6 until 7:30 p.m.
